3D printed titanium preform

Norsk Titanium says that it has 3D printed a near-net-shape preform for a US defense project.

The company made the near-net-shape structural wing component for General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, based in California.

According to the company, using metal additive manufacturing (AM) to make the titanium alloy part replaced forging. The company next plans to finish the product in preparation for a potential installation and flight test.

“This has been a significant test of our end-to-end value equation and development process,” said Nicholas Mayer, Norsk Titanium VP.
