Volkswagen improves safety with 3D printer

Volkswagen has acquired a second metal 3D printer to improve safety and eliminate manual processes.

The MetalFAB system, supplied by Additive Industries, will be installed in its 3D printing center established in 2018 to produce intricate automotive components. It features full-field lasers and automated build changeovers, increasing productivity rates and offering lights-out operations, according to the company. Volkswagen has also acquired Additive Industries’ powder load tool and powder recovery station to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

“We are here to help [Volkswagen] expand their capabilities in the field of additive manufacturing and move towards the next step in the automotive industry,” said Mark Massey, CEO of Additive Industries.
