Filament for metal 3D printing

BASF’s 3D printing company Forward AM has launched a filament material comprising metal powder with a polymer binder, suitable for fused filament fabrication (FFF).

According to the company, using the material can produce metal parts for prototypes, metal tooling, and functional metal parts more easily and safety. After debinding and sintering, the final 3D printed part is made of 17-4 stainless steel.

The material also has corrosion resistance and can be fully heat treated to high levels of strength and hardness, Forward AM said.

‘We filamented more than 10 different metals from titanium to tool-grade steels, and several alternative materials to print support structures within this year,’ said Firat Hizal, head of metal systems, BASF. ‘Going forward we will continue to introduce the new filaments that the market and our customers demand.’
