ORNL wins PM R&D award

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have received R&D awards for two 3D printing and metallurgy projects.

One project involved 3D printing thermally conductive collimators (a device which narrows a beam of particles or waves), using aluminum-boron carbide matrix composite-based manufacturing.

The second project creates OpeN-AM, a platform for performing operando neutron diffraction studies of metals during additive manufacturing (AM), consisting of a deposition head, machining capabilities and infrared monitoring.
