New ASME president

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has nominated Dr Thomas Kurfess as its 142nd president.

Dr Kurfess is the chief manufacturing officer of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the executive director of the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute. He is also holds the Husco/Ramirez distinguished chair in fluid power and motion control and professor of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech, and serves as the CTO at the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, the ASME said. He was the founding director for the manufacturing science division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the assistant director for advanced manufacturing at the US government’s office of science and technology policy.

Dr Kurfess has also been an active member of ASME for more than 30 years, according to the society. He is also an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
