ASTM focuses on in situ 3D printing

ASTM International has published a report covering the current state of additive manufacturing (AM) processes designed to be carried out in situ in the US.

The Strategic Guide: Additive Manufacturing In-Situ Technology Readiness report follows a two day workshop organized by NASA and 3D printing organization America Make and identifies potential solutions to current challenges.

“The strategic insights will also guide ASTM International and its members to bridge gaps in existing standards, and pioneer new standardization in the field,” said Dr Mohsen Seifi, ASTM vice president.

“The report is influential in guiding [NASA] in the development of methodologies and policies for the implementation of in situ monitoring technologies into the qualification and certification framework of AM hardware,” added Doug Wells, deputy technical fellow with NASA. “We look forward to continuing engagement with this community to bring to fruition all the promise of in situ monitoring to revolutionize the use and acceptance of AM in critical applications.”
