Stainless steel powder for AM

3D printing company EOS has developed StainlessSteel 17-4PH IndustryLine, an iron-based metal alloy powder for use in its EOS M 290 metal 3D printer.

According to the company, the metal powder is high strength, easily curable and highly corrosion and acid-resistant, making it suitable for surgical and orthopedic instruments. Parts can be additionally processed, micro-blasted, and polished directly after the additive manufacturing (AM) process or also after heat treatment. 

‘We have manufactured various instruments based on EOS StainlessSteel 17-4PH IndustryLine and achieved the desired material properties,’ said Zachary Bryan, metallurgist at US-based customer Exactech. ‘Exactech is planning to use this material for the small-scale manufacturing of medical instruments and intends to do so in collaboration with EOS.’
