HIP installed for aerospace AM

Italian thermal spray coatings specialist Flame Spray SpA has reportedly acquired a new hot isostatic press (HIP) to form part of the additive manufacturing (AM) process.

The company purchased the Quintus QIH 122 M URC press following growing demand for the densification and heat treatment process in the 3D printing of aerospace parts.

According to Quintus, the HIP can stress relieve, HIP, heat treat, and age parts in a single cycle, improving efficiency and reducing per-unit processing costs. It features a hot work zone of 26.0 inches (660 mm) in diameter and 68.9 inches (1750 mm) in height, and operates at a maximum pressure of 2,070 bar (30,000 psi) and a maximum temperature of 2,552°F (1,400°C).

‘Hot isostatic pressing is identified as one of the most promising technologies for the future,’ said Alessandro Zanini, Flame Spray aerospace manavger. ‘Our investment in the Quintus HIP allows us to provide a more complete range of special processes to our customers while satisfying the needs of the aerospace industry for high quality, reliability, and repeatability.’
