GKN has developed a prototype of metal hydride storage tank made of structures produced by powder metallurgy (PM).

The tank features loss-free storage of hydrogen, high storage density (50 l gas bottle corresponds to 50 kWh of stored energy) and the use of hydrogen from renewable energy sources.

‘Hydrogen will play a central role in low-emission energy supply in future, and this is why GKN is working intensively on this trend,’ said Guido Degen, senior vice president business development & advanced technology – powder metallurgy at GKN.

As the missing link in the energy revolution chain, hydrogen storage offers efficient support for carbon-neutral energy production, he said, suggesting that the technology could be an integral part of applications for energy storage, decentralised energy provision solutions and emission-free, fuel-cell based transport.

The company showed the prototype tank to North-Rhine Westphalian Minister of Economic Affairs Garrelt Duin at the GKN Sinter Metals innovation and research center.
