Umicore invests in battery manufacturer

Umicore says that it has invested in Solid Power, a Colorado-based developer of solid-state batteries for electric vehicles.

According to Umicore, Solid Power has been researching ways to improve the performance of its batteries using low-cost, industry standard processes.

The batteries reportedly have a 50 to 75% increase in energy density compared to other commercially available lithium-ion batteries, with an improved safety profile due to their solid cell architecture.

Car manufacturers and cell makers such as Ford, BMW, Hyundai and Samsung have invested in Solid Power’s technology, Umicore said.
