UK January engine production falls almost 16%

UK engine production declined 15.9% compared to January 2021, to 141,472 units, said the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Production for domestic and overseas markets fell 29.2% and 6.2% respectively.

“The impact of global semiconductor shortages continues to stall engine production and, with rising energy costs and inflation, the outlook remains challenging,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. “We need a clear strategy and long-term support to keep the UK internationally competitive, attract investment and ensure this critical sector can transition to an electrified fu-ture, futureproofing highly skilled jobs and livelihoods for the decades ahead.”
