Ceramics specialist Kyocera has introduced a new milling cutter for aluminum machining.

The company has also developed a new series of tool holders with a coolant supply, chip breakers for the manufacture of small processed parts, polygonal tool holders and new tools for steel machining.

The company’s new MEAS milling cutters are designed for high-speed aluminum machining and reportedly have long service lives and low cutting forces. They have a stable clamping system and tool holder design, Kyocera says.

The Jet Coolant Through (JCT) series of tool holders are suitable for a high pressure coolant supply. For turning, there is the double clamp JCT variant which allows a coolant supply from three directions, while for cut-off and external grooving, Kyocera has designed the KGD-JCT variation, which directs the coolant onto the rake surface and the frank surface of the indexable insert. The KTN-JCT variation has been developed for threading and features two cooling holes that can help reduce the tendency for plate breakages. The JCT series also includes smaller tools with internal coolant supplies which can operate at a pressure of up to 200 bar.

Kyocera says that it has also expanded its range of the chip breakers in the P and PF series for boring process. The P chip breakers direct the chips away to the outside of the workpiece, controlling the direction of the chip evacuation. The minimum machining diameter is 5 mm and due to the low cutting forces, it is possible to obtain surfaces with a high-gloss mirror finish.

The company has also developed tool holders with a polygonal interface and flange contact surface in accordance with ISO 26623-1. The repeat accuracy has a tolerance of ± 2 μm, with an equal distribution of the clamping force. The polygonal tool holders can be used for turning, grooving and external grooving, and other designs are to follow shortly.

In addition, Kyocera says that it is expanding its CA025P series of chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-coated carbide tools for steel machining. In the process the product range is gaining a number of additional geometries, radii and chip breakers.
