America Makes says that additive manufacturing (AM) company Rapid Prototype + Manufacturing LLC (rp+m), has put together a database covering the use of UTLEM 9085 Type I resin for fused deposition modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing (AM).
‘The qualification of the ULTEM 9085 material and the establishment of the material properties database by the rp+m-led team are huge steps forward for AM, particularly within the aerospace and defense industries,’ said America Makes Executive Director Rob Gorham.
The ULTEM 9085 Database features mechanical and physical properties, as well as processing parameters. ULTEM 9085 resin is a polyetherimide thermoplastic material with a higher strength-to-weight ratio and flame, smoke, and toxicity (FST) rating. This material is often used in aerospace, automotive, and other industrial applications where a higher-strength thermoplastic material is needed. The resin was the first additively manufactured material tested under the National Center for Advanced Material Performance (NCAMP) process. It is pending official approval from the NCAMP.
America Makes also noted that a new volume of the Composites Material Handbook will be published focusing on non-metallic AM and material data, and that SAE International has created a non-metallic AM committee.
