3D Systems completes sale of non-AM businesses

3D Systems plans to sell its medical simulation business, Simbionix, to a Swedish supplier of reality simulators for medical training.

Surgical Science Sweden AB will acquire the business for a purchase price of US$305 million, the company said. Simbionix reported sales in 2020 of US$40.8 million.

According to 3D Systems, this move will complete its strategy to divest non-core businesses to focus on additive manufacturing (AM).

‘As the Simbionix team now joins forces with Surgical Science, I believe their future will be even brighter, with increased scale and an ability to leverage the core strengths of both businesses in a growing medical simulation market,’ said Dr Jeffrey Graves, president & CEO, 3D Systems. ‘Having reorganized the company into two business units – Healthcare and Industrial Solutions – and restructured to drive operational efficiencies over the last year, we now move forward expecting strong organic growth and profitability.’
