27% growth in car production

UK car production output grew 26.9% in May 2023 compared to 2022, a report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says.

This is reportedly the fourth month to show an increase, although figures are down 31.9% compared to May 2019, it said.

Volumes for the UK increased by 45.4% to 16,188 units and exports rose by 22.9% to 62,858 units, with the EU remaining the biggest global market.

“All political parties must recognise the strategic importance of this sector and back our call for an industrial strategy that supports local production, assures export market access and attracts further investment to safeguard our future,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.
