The recent MIM2018 Conference held in Irvine, California, was the most successful yet, with record-breaking attendance. Summaries of selected presentations reported here cover developments in materials, processes and products.
The MIM2018 International Conference on Injection Molding of Metals, Ceramics and Carbides was held in Irvine, California, on March 6–7, and was the most successful yet, in terms of a record-breaking attendance of 180 from 14 countries. Attendance was about equally split between industry suppliers and parts manufacturers/end users. The conference was sponsored by MIMA, the Metal Injection Molding Association, a trade association of MPIF. The conference was preceded on March 5 by an all-day tutorial on Powder Injection Molding given by Dr. Randall German, Emeritus Professor at San Diego State University. There were also meetings of the MIMA standards committee, MIMA Board of Directors, and the MIMA membership. Following the tutorial, an opportunity was also taken to visit the nearby facility of Arburg Inc., injection molding equipment manufacturers, who hosted a Welcome Reception and provided a brief introduction to the firm plus a live demonstration of automated injection molding of a turbo-charger component.
The conference was opened by co-chair Michael Stucky (Norwood Medical Technologies, USA), who introduced the Keynote speaker, Dr. Benedikt Blitz (Managing Director, SMR Premium GmbH, Germany, a market research and consulting company), Blitz discussed markets for special steels, metal powders and MIM from a global perspective.
