GKN Hydrogen (GKN) has received US$1.7m to install two metal hydride hydrogen storage tanks at a governmental renewable energy site.

The company has been funded by the US Department of Energy's (DoE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to add two HY2MEGA metal hydride hydrogen storage tanks to the hydrogen assets at a NREL facility Boulder, Colorado, USA.

The storage subsystem will be connected to a large electrolyzer and fuel cell at the ARIES facility, GKN said.

HY2MEGA tanks have energy storage capacity of over 260kg hydrogen and are reportedly the largest metal hydride storage on the market.

‘This a tremendous opportunity to collaborate with the DOE National Laboratories to validate and run megawatt scale use cases with our green, safe and compact metal hydride hydrogen storage solution,’ said Peter Oberparleiter, CEO at GKN Powder Metallurgy. ‘Projects of this scale are needed to accelerate the adoption of zero emission technologies to help us all meet our future clean energy goals.’

In all, the DoE is investing nearly US$8 million funding for nine cooperative projects, according to the company.
