Rare earth-free electric motor

Renault Group, automotive supplier Valeo and electric mobility company Valeo Siemens eAutomotive have formed a strategic partnership to make automotive electric motors without using rare earths.

The companies aim to develop the two key parts of the electric motor: the rotor and the stator. Renault will design am electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) rotor technolog without the use of rare earths. The overall architecture of the all-in-one motor for will also be designed by Renault, the company said.

Valeo and Valeo Siemens eAutomotive will develop and produce the stator based on Valeo's technological expertise in copper wire assembly. Using a higher density of copper in the stator, reportedly helps the motor generate more power without using more electrical energy.

Plans are to mass produce the rare earth-free 200kW electric motor from 2027 at Renault Group's plant in Normandy, France.

"This partnership is further demonstration of our capacity to be at the forefront of the electric revolution taking place in the automotive industry and to anchor the new automotive value chain in France,” said Luca de Meo, Renault Group CEO.
