New US atomization plant

Ultra Fine Specialty Products, a Novamet company, says that its manufacturing site in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, USA has installed capabilities to produce pilot quantities of gas atomized powders.

According to the company this will help it develop custom alloys based on iron, cobalt, nickel, and copper for powder bed fusion and binder jet printing. The newly commissioned pilot atomizer enables orders of as little as 50 kg and quantities can be scaled to higher volumes on existing production equipment, Ultra Fine said.

The company’s pilot and production atomizers use a gas atomization process to produce high purity spherical metal powders with tightly sized particle distributions (d90 <30 µm)

for metal injection molding (MIM) and metal additive manufacturing (AM0. “The pilot equipment will enable development of technology to further optimize particle size distributions, improve sphericity, and reduce satellites to facilitate the growth of these processes,” a press release said.
