According to the company, the rocket is powered by a patented 3D printed scramjet engine (a type of jet engine that relies on the combustion of fuel and an oxidizer to produce thrust).
According to Hypersonix, the engine requires a boost to Mach 5 in order to self-ignite. Once flying at this speed, it can accelerate to speeds of up to Mach 7.
“We look forward to partnering with the innovative team at Hypersonix to deliver highly capable, frequent, and cost-effective hypersonic and suborbital test opportunities,” said Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck.
