Powder metal specialist Höganäs has developed two surface welding powders designed to prolong component lifetime in tough wear environments.

Rockit 606 and Rockit 706 reportedly have high impact and abrasive wear resistance and are suitable for applications in the oil and gas and mining and construction industries.

According to the company, the impact wear resistance of components used currently often tends to be low due to material brittleness.  Höganäs says that its new powders have a martensitic structure with finely dispersed vanadium carbides, giving them improved wear characteristics and a consistent high hardness together with a good impact resistance. According to field tests, when applied onto wear plates for dozer blades, cladding material costs could be reduced by 30% while maintaining the same lifespan achieved with other industry products.

Rockit 606 is recommended for laser cladding, while Rockit 706 is the suitable choice for the plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding process, Höganäs says.

‘The materials have excellent welding properties and achieve a smooth deposit,’ said Hans Keller, president of product area surface and joining technologies at Höganäs. ‘We are building on the success of the previously launched Rockit 401 material, a sustainable solution to replace hard chrome plating. The material has quickly become a standard in the mining and construction industry.’
