GE reports that its GE9X jet engine has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval.

The certification means that GE can begin to manufacture the engines commercially, the company said.

According to GE, the engine and the Boeing 777X aircraft it has been designed for, will be 20% more fuel-efficient than previous models.

The engine incorporates ceramic matrix composites that allow the core parts of the GE9X to withstand temperatures as high as 2,400°F and also features a 134 inch fan, made from carbon fiber composite blades.

GE says that the GE9X engine also has more than 300 3D-printed parts, including a nozzle designed to further reduce fuel use.
