Aluminum suitable for CNC

Prototype specialist Protolabs has added aluminum 5083-H111 (3.3547 or AlMg4.5Mn0.7) to its range of metals suitable for its fast turnaround (computer numerical control) CNC process.

The material is used in extreme environments because its high magnesium content makes it resistant to saltwater and industrial chemicals, the company said. It is also one of the strongest non-heat treatable aluminium alloys available, has a good strength to weight ratio and is weldable.

Other metal available for CNC include brass, copper, titanium, stainless steel and aluminum alloys.
