Altair acquires AM design software company

AI specialist Altair has acquired Gen3D, a UK startup company which has developed design technology software that can cope with highly complex additive manufacturing (AM) geometries such as lattice structures.

According to the company, Gen3D’s technology “uses next-generation implicit modeling techniques to rapidly create complex geometry not practical with traditional boundary representation (BREP) solid approaches”. This means that components can be designed by specifying the functional requirements for the part (loads, holes for fastenings, keep-out zones, ducts for fluid flow etc). Altair says the technology can automatically filter out component geometries that could cause downstream manufacturing issues.

Gen3D design software is reportedly suitable for applications such as energy absorption, heat transfer, filtration in industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, medical and energy.

“The Gen3D team brings deep industry knowledge and experience in advanced additive design techniques such as generative design, topology optimization, and lattice structure generation,” said James R Scapa, CEO of Altair.

Altair says that Gen3D’s technology will be integrated into its Altair Inspire design software.
