The US Geological Survey stated that "the United States has rare earth resources, but except for Mountain Pass, California, these resources are not being exploited.” According to Survey estimates, "domestic reserves and inferred resources are about 1.5 million tons which is large compared to the peak domestic consumption (in 2007) of 10,200 tons."According to Reuters, manufacturers are in turn redesigning their products in order to use fewer rare earth resources, or use them more efficiency. Steven Duclos of GE is reported as saying that: "The fact is a lot of [products] have been designed and the manufacturing processes have been designed at times when the material was not at risk.
