Umicore plant runs on renewable energy

Umicore has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with utility company Engie to supply its cathode materials plant with renewable electricity in Nysa, Poland.

Engie will provide green electricity from an existing wind farm in Pagów, 80 km from Nysa.

Umicore says that this new agreement will help contribute to its roadmap towards carbon neutrality by 2035 and secure long-term renewable electricity supply for the plant in Nysa. The plant will be the first in Europe to produce cathode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries, the company added.

’We are very proud that our cathode materials production plant, the first in Europe, will be carbon neutral as of the start of production,’ said Marc Grynberg, CEO of Umicore.
