UK engine manufacturing surpassed two million units in Q3, the first time since records began, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Engine production rose 3.9% in September with more than 248,463 units made for home and export markets. While domestic demand was up 11.1% compared with September last year, exports made up a 51.3% share of output.
More than two million new British engines were manufactured year-to-date, an increase of 5% on 2016.
‘UK engine manufacturing has repeatedly demonstrated the benefits of long-term investment into R&D and plants,’ said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. It’s pleasing to see production exceed the 2 million mark already but future success depends on strong demand at home and abroad. The European market, which is the destination for the majority of our engines, continues to grow so it’s important we maintain free and frictionless access.’
