The makers of a steel milling grade offering insert tool life and stable production have won the Wilhelm Haglund medal for product developer of the year.
Sandvik Coromant’s Karin Andersson, Björn Ericsson, Emmanuelle Göthelid and Marie Pettersson developed the cemented carbide grade called GC 1130 which has suitable for steel milling with a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating. It uses a fine-grained cemented carbide with a high content of chrome together with a layer made with Zertivo, Sandvik's production technology for PVD grades. This technology enables increased control over the manufacturing process, which is then adapted to the grade-specific requirements.
‘This recognition highlights the importance of material and process development along with systematic work in grade development for success in metal cutting,’ said Emmanuelle Göthelid.
The Wilhelm Haglund medal has been awarded since 1986 and is named after the managing director who laid the foundations for Sandvik’s successes in the cemented-carbide area.
