Record plug-in vehicles registration

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says that around 287,000 plug-in vehicles will be registered in 2021, more than from 2010 to 2019 combined.

According to the organization, battery electric vehicles are forecast to outsell conventional diesel and mild-hybrid diesel cars in 2022.

A total of 271,962 new battery electric (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) were registered between 2010 and 2019.

‘The rise is even more remarkable given that 2021 is expected to be a relatively weak year for new car registrations,’ the SMMT said in a press release. ‘The semiconductor shortage has reduced overall global car production, but manufacturers have done all they can to ensure the availability of as many plug-in vehicles as possible.’

The UK reportedly plans to be the first major automotive market to end the sale of new conventional petrol and diesel cars in 2030.
