PPG receives Chairman’s Award at METALCON 2012

PPG Industries’ coil and extrusion coatings group received a 2012 Chairman’s Award from the Metal Construction Association, MCA, at METALCON, the only annual conference dedicated to metal construction products, technologies and solutions. The Chairman’s Awards are an annual designation given to outstanding projects involving members of the MCA. Recipients of the awards, which honor innovation and creativity in exceptional metal building design, are selected by a panel of independent architects and presented in eight categories, including municipal, primary and secondary education, colleges and universities, institutional, commercial/industrial, roofing, residential and overall excellence.

PPG supplied coatings for the Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier in San Diego, which earned the Chairman’s Award in the municipal building category. A 52,000 square-foot structure painted with DURANAR(R) VARI-COOL(R) coatings1 by PPG, Port Pavilion contains a passenger facility for cruise ships as well as an office for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The project was cited for its striking visual appearance, sustainability and use of conventional materials to “create a modern-looking building originating from a 90-year-old pier.”

Chancey Hagerty, PPG business director, building products, said winning the award was a team effort. “From the building owner and architect to the contractor and sheet metal installer, everyone played a vital role in making this project a success,” he said. “We are pleased to accept this award on behalf of all the people, companies and suppliers who brought this beautiful and highly functional building to life.”

PPG was honored with fellow MCA member Morin, a Kingspan Group company, which supplied the metal wall and roof panels. Other project partners were architect Bermello, Ajamil & Partners, Inc., Miami; general contractor Jaynes Corp., San Diego; and sheet metal installer Challenger Sheet Metals, San Diego. The building owner is the San Diego Unified Port District.

Duranar Vari-Cool coatings are formulated with PPG’s proprietary ULTRA-COOL(R) infrared-reflective coating technology, which deflects solar heat from buildings to keep them cooler and enables them to use less air conditioning. The coatings also have pigments that change color depending on ambient lighting conditions and the angle from which they are viewed.
