PPG Industrial Coatings Adds Electronic Materials Products, Capabilities

PPG Industries’ industrial coatings business has created a dedicated electronic materials group to integrate products and technologies acquired from Spraylat Corporation, Mt. Vernon, N.Y., in December 2012.PPG now offers a full line of electrically conductive, resistive and dielectric inks and conductive coatings for radio-frequency interference/electromagnetic interference (RFI/EMI) suppression. These inks and coatings are used in diverse applications, including:

  • Touch-control panels for smartphones, tablets and other consumer devices
  • Interactive and electrochromic displays
  • Biomedical sensors
  • Printed keypads and other industrial membrane switch controls;
  • Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags
  • Other products that require printed circuitry

Conductive polymer thick film (PTF) inks, which are typically formulated with a metallic flake or powder to carry a charge and bound with a thermoplastic resin, can be printed on polymer-based film, polycarbonate, paper and other substrates. PTF inks are compatible with most printing methods, from flatbed and rotary-screen printing and flexography to rotogravure, as well as tampo (pad) and inkjet printing.John Yundt, PPG business development manager, industrial coatings, said Spraylat’s technology leadership, backed by PPG’s coatings development resources and global customer-support infrastructure, will give customers new and better choices for printed electronic materials. “The range of customers and industries incorporating printed electronics and circuitry is growing,” he said. “By establishing an electronic materials group, PPG is showing its commitment to investing in the advancement of these technologies. Our team of talented professionals and the innovative technologies they’ve created will help PPG bring world-class products and services to customers in these fast-growing markets.”For more information about electronically conductive inks and coatings available on PPG's website.
