Plansee converts to sustainable hydrogen

Plansee has signed an agreement with gas specialist Linde to establish a sustainable hydrogen supply for its production lines.

This involves the installation of a hydrogen electrolyzer to generate the hydrogen from water and electricity at its plant in Reutte, Austria, the company sad.

According to Plansee, the electrolyzer will have an output of four megawatts and could generate up to 800 m/3 of hydrogen per hour at a purity of 99.999%. The electricity needed to power the electrolyzer will reportedly be obtained from renewable sources.

It will initially supply half the hydrogen required, Plansee said, with plans to establish an exclusively CO2-free hydrogen supply for the factory by 2030.

"Producing hydrogen from natural gas is currently responsible for 50% of all CO2 emissions at our Reutte production plant,” said Ulrich Lausecker, MD of Plansee High Performance Materials. “These emissions can be halved by 2025 thanks to the new hydrogen electrolyzer."
