Cooksongold has introduced platinum alloy metal powder at the Baselworld Jewellery Fair, taking place from the 17–24 March 2016 in Basel, Switzerland.

Using the new 950 Pt/Ru (platinum) metal powder with its established direct precious metal 3D printing system, the Precious M080 developed by EOS, enables 3D printing technology to become a viable commercial opportunity for the platinum jewellery industry for the first time, the company claims.

Cooksongold's Pt/Ru alloy has been specifically developed for 3D printing. This means that once the designs have been printed in the Precious M 080 they can be post processed, milled without any of the common problems associated with other Pt alloys.

‘This is one of the most revolutionary developments for the 3D printing technology,’ said David Fletcher, business development manager, at Cooksongold. ‘Helping to eliminate the common problems associated with casting platinum, it will become vital for bespoke and low volume platinum jewellery production.’

950 Pt/Ru will be added to Cooksongold's existing portfolio of advanced metal powders, which consists of 18k 3N yellow gold, 18k white gold, 18k 5N red gold and Brilliante 925 silver (which has anti tarnish properties). Further new powders, such as base metals and other carat gold alloys, are currently being developed and scheduled for release throughout 2016. The copany’s metal powder are also suitable for metal injection molding (MIM), press and sinter technology, laser sintering/selective laser melting (SLM) and industrial applications such as brazing.
