NASA focuses on part certification

NASA and Carnegie Mellon University have set up a research institute aimed at improving computer modelling and qualification of metal 3D-printed parts for space applications.

According to the organizations, additive manufacturing (AM) parts require better characterization in order to certify them for spacecraft use. Detailed computer models could allow engineers to understand the parts' capabilities and limitations and improve predictability.

"The internal structure of this type of part is much different than what's produced by any other method," said Tony Rollett, professor of metallurgical engineering and materials science at Carnegie Mellon. "The institute will focus on creating the models NASA and others in industry would need to use these parts on a daily basis."
