Machine learning could improve AM parts

Metal and carbon fiber 3D printing specialist Markforged has developed Cloud-based software which it says can help improve the quality of printed parts.

The company’s Digital Forge software uses federated learning, a machine learning process that aims to improve parts with each print using data from the company’s 12,000 plus printers currently in use.

‘The parts are more accurate than can be achieved from mechanical hardware alone,’ a press release said. ‘Because the platform itself is Cloud-based, it can be constantly updated and enhanced so that customers are always able to leverage new advancements.’

‘Through the Digital Forge, manufacturers can use our powerful software to easily fabricate strong, accurate, and durable metal and composite parts for orders of magnitude cheaper than they’ve traditionally been made,’ claimed Greg Mark, chairman of Markforged.
