Höganäs says that it is investing ‘several million euros’ to modernize and expand thermal barrier coating (TBC) powders production at its site in Laufenburg, Germany.

According to the company, this expansion is due to an expected increase in customer demand. In 2020, the company also invested in an atomization plant aimed at producing powders for 3D printing.

TBC powders are used in the energy and aviation sectors to help increase turbine efficiency. Gas turbine technology could help the energy sector move from fossil energy production to CO2 neutral energy production in the form of renewable energies, Höganäs said.

‘By the summer of 2023, we will have significantly increased the production capacities for TBC powders through utilising several state-of-the-art production units as well as making improvements along the entire process chain,’ said Peter Thienel, head of operations.
