H.C. Starck Ceramics develops new silicon compound

According to H.C. Starck, the compound can be processed using electrical discharge machining (EDM), and reportedly makes it significantly easier to process ceramic parts than is possible using conventional silicon nitride.H.C. Starck Ceramics’ new Si3N4 is electroconductive, thereby making it possible to manufacture complex ceramic tools via EDM otherwise impossible using conventional silicon nitride. The new compound shows significantly improved wear resistance, meaning longer tool lifetimes and, as a result, considerable cost savings.
