Hart will provide new materials for a wide range of lightweight powder metallurgy (PM) structural components for use in military vehicles.
“The funds will be used to install a special atomiser that will be operating during the fourth quarter of this year or early 2010,” says Deepak Madan, vice president of technology. “We have been atomising pure magnesium powders using our own proprietary atomisation technology for many decades,” he told Metal Powder Report.
“In the future, new lightweight materials, such as magnesium, will replace the much heavier materials currently utilised in military vehicles,” added US Congressman Tim Holden, who helped secure the funding. “Lighter vehicles will results in improved fuel efficiencies and will allow our nation to reduce its dependence on foreign oil”.
