Grant for metal foam

Advanced Materials Manufacturing (AMM) has received a US$1.8 mn governmental grant to improve composite metal foam (CMF) for defense applications.

According to AMM, CMF material was first developed at North Carolina State University by its inventor, Afsaneh Rabiei. It can can be made from any metal, alloy and is processed via a casting or powder metallurgy (PM) technique.

The material incorporates a homogenous mixture of hollow, air-filled metal spheres with a metal matrix surrounding. A 100% steel CMF bar will weigh the same as an equal-sized solid aluminum bar, the company said.
