Design excellence awards: the winners

They won the prize for improved net shape, precision, innovative fabrication methods, production efficiency, sustainability contributions, and manufacturing cost reduction. GKN Sinter Metals earned the Grand Prize in the automotive – engine category for a copper steel rotor adapter assembly that is part of a VVT system used in a Chrysler V6 engine. GKN was also awarded a Grand Prize in the automotive – transmission category for a self-contained unitized one-way clutch module for torque converter stator applications made for Chrysler Group LLC. Capstan Atlantic received the Grand Prize in the automotive – chassis category for a copper steel two-stage helical gear and pinion that functions in an actuator assembly for a power liftgate. The Grand Prize in the lawn & garden/off-highway category went to FMS Corporation for a copper steel gear–race made for Novariant Corporation that is used in the OnTrac2+ GPS-assisted hands-free steering system for agricultural applications. ASCO Sintering Company won the Grand Prize in the hardware/appliances category for a copper-infiltrated steel inside deadbolt chassis that goes into a commercial electronic lock system. FloMet LLC earned the Grand Prize in the aerospace/militarycategory for a MIM 17-4 PH stainless steel rotor used in a lightweight, hand-emplaced munitions device for the U.S. military. Five MIM 17-4 PH stainless steel components that are assembled as a mechanical introducer device made by STD Med, Inc, and used in minimally invasive OB/GYN surgical procedures, earned a Grand Prize in the medical/dental category for Parmatech Corporation. Capstan California Inc received the Grand Prize in the electrical/electronic components category for a soft magnetic coil housing made for Reliable Security Group Inc that is used in a system to secure commercial doors in emergencies. Capstan Atlantic was awarded the Grand Prize in the industrial motors/controls & hydraulics category for a clutch hub that functions as an actuator in power take-off. Rounding out the Grand Prizes is the one earned by Smith Metal Products in the consumer products category for two 17-4 PH stainless steel MIM parts that make up the nose bridge of the frame of Superfocus adjustable glasses made by Superfocus, LLC. The Awards of Distinction include two in the automotive – engine category. The first was given to SolidMicron Technologies Pte Ltd, Singapore, for a stainless steel MIM valve seat made for Magnetti Marelli SpA Powertrain, Italy, that is part of a direct fuel injector. The second Award of Distinction in this category was won by Burgess-Norton Mfg Co for a soft magnetic composite solenoid core used in a high-pressure fuel injector made by Cummins Inc. The Asturias/Spain Plant of the PMG Group won an Award of Distinction in the automotive – transmission category for an iron–copper steel synchronizer hub made for Aichi Machine Industry Co. Ltd., and used in a double-clutch transmission. A stainless steel spacer tube used in a steering application made by Futuris Automotive Interiors (Australia) Pty Ltd earned an Award of Distinction in the automotive – chassis category for its fabricator, ACL Bearing Company. Porite Taiwan Co Ltd won an Award of Distinction in the lawn & garden/off-highway category for a diffusion-alloyed steel gear, one of five PM gears in a gear output box for a tiller transmission made by Pubert SAS, France. An Award of Distinction in the hardware/appliances category was given to Capstan for an iron–copper steel rack used in an industrial washing machine application. Six 17-4 PH stainless steel MIM parts made by Megamet Solid Metals, Inc., and used in a cable tie tool made by HellermanTyton, received an Award of Distinction in the hand tools/recreation category. Capstan California won an Award of Distinction in the industrial motors/controls & hydraulics category for a bronze solvent filter used in a solvent-pumping system made for Sperry Product Innovation Inc. Another Award of Distinction in this category went to four stainless steel MIM parts made by Advanced Materials Technologies Pte Ltd, Singapore, and used in the print module of an industrial printer. The final Award of Distinction, in the electrical/electronic category, was earned by Smith Metal Products for a 17-4 PH stainless steel MIM lever made for Methode Electronics, Inc, that functions as a latch ejector mechanism on an RJ45 hot-pluggable transceiver module.
