Composites for high temperatures

Prepreg specialist Axiom, a subsidiary of Kordsa, says that it will develop a line of carbon/silicon carbide and silicon carbide/silicon carbide composite intermediates under license from the Japan Science and Technology Agency and NITE Corporation of Japan.

According to the company, this will allow Axiom to expand its offerings for aerospace and industrial structural applications with service temperatures to 1400°C. Axiom could also supply silicon carbide materials for scientific and industrial nuclear plant applications.

Carbon/silicon carbide composites can be used in static components of jet engines and automotive or aircraft disk brake applications, while silicon carbide composites materials can be used in aircraft jet engine power systems and rocket engine components that require improved resistance to high temperature, creep, high corrosion/erosion in a complex static and dynamic stress/strain environment.
