Clunkers’ deals net $2.9 billion

Toyota  was one of the big winners under the programme with 19.4% of the market for trade-ins. General Motors was just behind on 17.6%. Ford (www.ford.com) took a 14.4% share and Chrysler  6.6%.

General Motors is attempting to repair relationships with parts makers after emerging from bankruptcy, saying it will share more of the savings from suppliers’ cost reduction proposals. Spokesman Dan Flores said that under the policy suppliers will keep half of the savings from their proposals for components for the life of the parts.

After the success of the US vehicle scrappage programme, a $300 million federally funded “Dollars for Dishwashers” programme is to be aimed at spurring sales of energy-efficient domestic appliances.
