China drops export quotas for rare earth metals

China has dropped its quotas that limited exports of rare earth metals, including molybdenum.
China has dropped its quotas that limited exports of rare earth metals, including molybdenum.

The change follows the WTO’s decision last April to rule against China’s restriction.

The quotas sparked a global trade dispute and resulted for a while in a global shortage in the metals but also led some countries to reduce their reliance on Chinese supplies. As a result of the export quotas, other countries developed new sources for rare earths, including in South Korea and Canada.

However, the country is still responsible for more than 90% of global rare earth production.
