Carpenter and United States Steel Corporation are to develop a “lightweighting” steel for automotive applications.

Plans are to develop Carpenter’s Temper Tough specialized steel alloy, which was originally designed for the aerospace industry. With the new agreement, the new alloy could help automotive manufacturers meet recently mandated Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards by lightweighting vehicles through mass reduction. Temper Tough is also very strong and ductile, making it safer for use critical automotive support parts.

US Steel Corp, the country's biggest steel company, will develop the grade through its operational footprint.
