Alcoa was again recognised as the aluminium industry leader on the index.

“Sustainability is a core Value at Alcoa,” said Kevin McKnight, Alcoa chief sustainability officer and vice president of environment, health and safety. “No decision is made or action taken without a careful consideration of the economic, environmental, and social impacts that may result.

"In 2013, we worked more safely with fewer environmental impacts. While we’re continuing to improve the sustainability of our global operations, our light-metal innovations are creating a more sustainable world by enabling greener cars and trucks, more fuel efficient airplanes and more energy-efficient buildings."

Community investment

In 2013 Alcoa had its safest year on record, with no employee fatalities and a 30%reduction in workplace injury rate. It also reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 25.5% from the 2005 baseline, and lowered absolute emissions by 3.1 million metric tons. It invested US$40.9 million in community programmes through Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation and 37,200 employees volunteered in their communities during a Worldwide Month of Service.
