Additive manufacturing modeling challenge

America Makes and the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have launched an additive manufacturing (AM) modeling prize.

The prize comprises four individual challenges, with US$150,000 to be divided among awardees.

The aim of the AFRL AM Challenge Series is to develop data sets for the calibration of the developed models that can help predict the internal structure and performance of AM metallic components. It will feature Inconel nickel-chromium alloy 625 (IN625), which is suitable for aerospace applications due to its corrosion resistance, elevated temperature performance, and improved fatigue and thermal-fatigue properties.

‘We are optimistic that the Challenge Series will significantly improve the predictability and accuracy of models and simulations and the qualification of AM processes and materials,’ said America Makes executive director John Wilczynski.

The prize is open to academia, small and large businesses and national laboratories, in the US and internationally. For more information, go here.
