JPMA 2019 Annual Report Summary

The annual report of the Japan Powder Metallurgy Association (JPMA) provides a unique overview of the activities and latest results of the PM industry in Japan as well as other Asian countries. Activities of the JPMA during the recent year are also covered.

In his Executive Director Report, Mr Yoshio Uetsuki, who took office in July 2019 (Figure 1), noted that the Japanese PM industry experienced a turning point during 2019 as production peaked in parallel with the automotive industry after three favorable years. He added that the Japanese economy responded to the declining world economy, slower exports and heavy damage from several typhoons.

According to the Japan Automobile Industry Association statistics, automotive production declined by 0.5% to 9.6 million units in 2019. Locally sold autos fell 1.5% after three years of increases. PM machine parts (structural parts) production was 86,200 metric tons, about 2.7% less than 2018. The report includes Japanese PM industry statistics for 2019 as well as PM production in eight other Asian countries. JPMA activities such as participation in APMA2019 in Pune, India, environmental protection campaign activities, publications, as well as awards, prizes, and technical and other committee news are briefly covered.
