2017 MPIF PM Design Excellence Competition: US auto parts shine again

Winners in this year's PM parts competition showed some outstanding designs. North American parts producers took most of the prizes.

Results of the 2017 MPIF PM Design Excellence Competition were announced at the luncheon on June 15 during the POWDERMET2017 International Conference in Las Vegas (see separate article). Outstanding entries in more categories than the previous year saw a total of 18 awards: eight Grand Prizes and ten Awards of Distinction. North American parts fabricators, including one from Canada, took all but two of the prizes and all but one of the Grand Prizes. The sole off-shore winner was Indo-MIM Pvt. Ltd, India, with two Awards of Distinction. All the winning parts were ferrous-based (copper-steel, low-alloy steel, or stainless steel), while five were MIM parts and the balance pressed and sintered. As expected, by far the largest area of application was in the automotive sector, with eight prizes in various categories.
